The steep walls trap moisture, creating a lush temperate rainforest zone usually found hundreds of kilometers further south. Giant Japanese beech and horse chestnut trees dominate the lower valley, while the upper reaches feature subalpine fir and delicate blooming Futakin-ayame —a rare iris that grows only on the valley’s mossy ledges.
